Hatha yoga is probably the most widely practised form of yoga and there are many disciplines that branch from hatha yoga. It is quite a physical form of yoga that focuses on postures done in a series and held for different lengths of time. The aims are to warm, tone and work all the muscle groups of the body to ensure a full work out.
Breathing is also very important in hatha yoga with the focus being drawn towards the breath. It is thought that by controlling the breath the body can also be controlled. The breath can also be used to enhance and develop the stretches by focussing it on certain tight parts of the body. In addition focus on the breath helps to bring an inward focus to develop spirituality. Finally meditation may be included at the end of a session in order to enhance this inward focus.
As with other forms of yoga, hatha yoga improves the flexibility, strength and tone of the body. In addition it improves circulation and reduces blood pressure. The inward focus helps to bring a peace of mind that can bring calm and relaxation to a person’s life.
