Herbal medicine, often also called botanical medicine is the process of using any plant seeds, berries roots or any part for medicinal purposes. The theory of herbalism has been used by some cultures for many centuries but is now becoming more mainstream as the benefits have become more widely known.
It is not clear which ingredient in a herb or plant is the one that will have the healing properties. However they are normally administered as a whole so this is less important. The conditions that the plant grew in will affect the quality of the plant and so its healing ability.
Many herbal remedies are available from health food stores, some of the better known ones are:
- Ginkgo, appears to produce improvements in awareness, judgment, and social function in people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
- St. John's wort is well known for its antidepressant effects however it may have similar side-effects to medicated anti-depressants.
- Valerian has been used to induce sleep in a similar way to sleeping pills, with the added benefit of producing no hangover feeling the next day.
- Echinacea may increase your immunity. It is particularly effective at warding off colds and flu-symptoms.
Many herbal remedies have not undergone the same testing as prescribed medications and so many side effects may not be known. You should make sure you do your research and consult and expert before embarking on a herbal treatment.
