Amma Therapy is an ancient Chinese form of massage and is thought to date back over 5,000 years. The name of Am-ma is literally translated as push-pull which gives an indication of the type of massage that is engaged. This form of massage is highly specialised and combines deep tissue massage with the application of pressure, friction and touch to certain pressure points around the body. In this sense it has similar qualities to acupuncture and acupressure.
As well as using some of the techniques of acupressure it can also be said that there are many aspects of Amma Therapy that overlap with shiatsu and chiropractic techniques. As a result Amma Therapy can be used to treat or manage a wide range of ailments that include traumas, chronic disorders such as arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, circulatory problems, anxiety, depression, gynaecological problems, premenstrual problems, menopausal considerations, autoimmune diseases, and neuromuscular disease
