Description
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder where the sufferer has a fear of being fat and will often have an unrealistic body image. Sufferers will usually go through periods of binge eating and then follow that will forceful vomiting or taking laxatives. They may also suffer from periods of fasting and excessive exercising. It is absolutely vital to get treatment for this condition as it can have serious health implications including malnutrition.
There are a number of alternative therapies that could potentially help sufferers of this condition and they include:
- Psychotherapy – this will involve the patient working with a therapist on an individual or group basis in order to address the mental attitude associated with the condition.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – this involves the patient working with the therapist to change their thought patterns and gain control over their eating.
- Nutritional Therapy – many sufferer will have severe deficiencies in their diet. A nutritional therapist will not be able to help with the condition but can help to ensure the sufferer gets the vitamins and minerals they need.
Other therapies that may aid with the symptoms and/or the condition are herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture and massage therapy.
