Why is Meditation not Available on NHS

I was reading an article by Miriam Stoppard on the Mirror blog and it asks some interesting questions about the availability of meditation on the NHS. It considers a therapy called mindful meditation which combines meditation, yoga and cognitive behavioural therapy. The therapy was actually approved by NICE over 5 years ago and is thought to be an effective treatment for depression.

However currently the therapy is still only available from one in five GPs and three quarters say that they do not have any alternative treatments to antidepressants available to them. This is a concerning admission and something that the NHS should be doing something to address especially considering mindful mediation can be very const effective. If you are suffering from depression discuss it with your GP and see if they are able to offer you mindful meditation.
