How Yoga Can Help Eating Disorders

A recent study was carried on 50 outpatients that were aged between 11 and 16 and had been suffering from an eating disorder. Over half of the patients considered had previously been hospitalised due to their condition and suffered from anorexia, bulemia and other non-specified eating disorders. The group was split into two with one half being given standard treatment and the other half being given standard treatment plus 2 hours of yoga a week taught by a qualified viniyoga professional.

The trial lasted for eight weeks and there was no significant difference between the two groups during the trial. However patients were followed up a month after the treatment was finished and many of the control group had shown a lapse into old habits. However the group who practised yoga had shown a significant improvements compared to the start of the treatment. In addition there was no weight change due to the yoga which meant it was still possible for the patients to put on weight as required. This trial indicated the importance that yoga may have on the state of mind and the possible benefits for people who have eating disorders.
